An Apple A Day...........

...........So, how many of you have gone out and got one?

What am I talking about?

The eagerly awaited first issue of Mollie Makes.

I couldn't wait to grab my copy, and boy it did not disappoint!

I have to say, if I am totally honest, I have issues with craft magazines of all sorts. Their front covers just have absolutely no appeal for me. Now, in their defense, I have bought the odd one, when a cover piece sentence has really struck me, but that is not often. And also, my mother-in-law does send me the odd copy through the post, and often as I flick through I find one or two things that I want to try....but in general, if I do crafty then it's from a book. I'm a real homes magazines kind of gal, so to find a craft magazine that features homes that are of a crafty inspirational angle, then that does it for me!

This one promised to be different. Beautiful eye catching front cover, gorgeous drool over pictures and photos, awesome features pages....dottie angel and Lola Nova amongst others. Printed on quality paper, beautifully presented, definitely a mag you will want to collect, look after, keep referring to and have for a long time. I really hope that they keep up the amazing standard they have set. Definitely the mag for me!

So, as you can tell from the pictures, I got a bit carried away with the front page project! Just LOVED them........COMPLETELY FELL IN LOVE WITH THEM!!!!!

Quick and easy to do, I had so many odds and ends of cotton yarn to use up, perfect for this. After a couple I remembered the pattern in my head so whilst it was fresh in my mind I carried on! So, well whether they are practical or not, they will be used! One in each of the Bears lunch boxes, one for my bag, one even for Mr H! And a few to keep in a bowl and just stare at longingly!!!!!!

Seriously I am a nut! These became the focus at the weekend. My blanket progress was slower . I did manage to get a few squares made, so my total so far is 317. I have just 115 to do. Wow, still a fair amount and I don't even reckon that I will be half way on the make it stage. It will take forever to sew together and then another forever to sew all the ends in! I'm so sure that it will be worth it though!

Nothing else was really done at the weekend. By Thursday we were all getting attacks of the sneezles, so by Saturday, Mr H was in bed and I soldiered on until I hit the brick wall midday Sunday. An evening on the sofa watching Practical Magic cheered me up no end! Love that film, want to live in that house!

Right, cup of tea, drool some more over the apple cosies and then crack on with all the mundane that I didn't do at the weekend! I have the wanties for Lola Novas Garland tutorial too. Need to look out some ribbons next. I am feeling the crafty love! So much to do and so little time!

Cheerio all,

Have a super Duper Monday!!!!!!!

  1. I subscribed to that mag over the weekend as it's on offer £5 for 3 issues to start with. Super duper! As if my to do list weren't long enough!!!

I credited you in my Tea Party post the other day, I made some sugar hearts.

I'm always astonished by how prolific a crocheter you are. What cotton do you use? As you know I have ISSUES with creative cotton!!

Going back to your cloud post, I wonder if what a person sees in a cloud is as indicative of their state of mind as their dreams are.....

  2. Hope the sniffle bug leaves your house in a hurry. It's tough enough being a mom and we don't need added burden of being sick! Love the apple cozies and Practical Magic is a great film. I've always been in love with that house!

  5. Lovely apple covers. I absolutely adored copy 1 of Mollie Makes and will be subscribing. Sneezles are around our house too and having been healthy all winter am feeling very grumpy about a summer cold! Still if it gets much worse I might have to stay in bed and make some of those little apple jackets...

  6. Ah, these are wonderful, you must show the magazine - on their facebook page or their twitter account. I'd love to know which cotton you are using as well. As ever, it is a delight to visit your blog!

And Mollie Makes is quite simply wonderful, I subscribed after I looked at the online sneak peek!!

  11. I got a copy and thought it looked pretty but didn't have anything that I hadn't seen on the Internet already. But, as you say, it is an improvement on most craft magazines! Cute apple cosies!

  13. Might have to look out for that mag when i next venture into the supermarket. Although i think the apple cozies might be out as the state my girls lunches boxes get i think I would cry! lol. Love the effect of them all in the basket though.

Wow you keep at the blanket I am sure it will be gorgeous when you have finished!

Hope the sniffles and sneezles have vacated your premises now.

  15. I loved the Mollie Makes too!! As you say I hope they manage to keep up the high standard.

You are so patient!! I started making those squares but got bored at 50 so my "blanket" is now going to be two cushion cover fronts!!

BTW did you know you can save a lot of time weaving in ends by working over them? When you join a new colour lay the tail of the previous colour behind the row you are about to start and work your next stitches over the tail - this weaves in as you go. Then you only have the final "fastening off" end to deal with.

Love Practical Magic too - spent 15 mins this morning trying to make my pigtails look like Sandra Bullocks!!

    hugs,

  16. I had a bit of a crochet weekend too - been making African Flowers - love them! (Pictures in my blog)

I adore those apple cosies - I keep seeing them cropping up in blog posts about the magazine - you're the first person I've seen who has made some up, though. They look fantastic! I can't believe how quickly you've made so many - I really should get the magazine and give them a go!

  17. Just a few made then?!!! They are lovely!! Must give them a try! Roll on Issue 2! Cx

  21. Have been unable to find the magazine and believe me I have searched endlessly! but I will subscribe online - it looks like a good deal. I don't buy magazines apart from Country Living subscription but this really does look different. I can't crocheet but will enjoy the pictures and, who knows, maybe I will learn! Your apple covers are beautiful - but as I am outnumbered by three men I can't see them going in the lunchbags like that!

  22. Hi Vanessa - I just discovered your beautiful blog! I love your use of colour, and I too would love to know which brand of cotton you use. The apple cosies are just so sweet, and if I'd made them, I wouldn't want them being thrown in the bottom of a school bag ;)
Looking forward to seeing more of your makes in the future

  27. I've searched high and low, but it's been sold out around here am I mad in wanting a magazine so much? Guess not when the buzz about it is so high. Sometimes snuffles and rain come along at the right time so you cna snuggle and crochet and film watch all weekend. Sounds like you're getting on brilliantly with that blanket. Bliss on the right days.

  38. Absolutely with you on those apple covers, just gorgeous. Was delighted to discover this magazine and, yes, it is a keeper! I subscribed to 'Making' but have become increasingly disappointed with each new issue, the first showed such promise. Let's hope 'Mollie Make's' continues to delight.

  39. I really want this magazine but can't find it in any of the shops near me. So frustrating! Husband is football training tonight and, bless him, has agreed to scour the late-night supermarkets for me. When he sees that I'm buying a magazine that tells you how to crochet jackets for your apples, he will think I've gone completely off my rocker! :-) Aren't they pretty though!!

I remain absolutely astonished by the speed at which you crochet. And more than a little bit jealous. Also, your photos are always styled so beautifully - do/did you work in lifestyle magazines/advertising or similar?

  41. Your apple cosies are very cute and colourful, but I'm still getting my head round why an apple needs a cosy?
I'm looking out for the magazine - seen it mentioned several times, but my local WHSmiths doesn't stock it.

  42. Oh, Vanessa, will you help me, lovely? I've tried to make one but mine came out far too big! I used Debbie Bliss DK cotton. Is it too thick? Any help would be appreciated. I hope yu're OK, my lovely friend. xxxxxxxxx

  44. You did good. Those apply thingymabobs are awesome.

I loved reading Mollie Makes - discovered Dottie Angel and read her blog obsessively this weekend - it's a lush magazine. Probably the best crafty mag I've seen.

And now I have to go and see what Practical Magic is all about.

your apple cozies look so cute and pretty!!

  48. Aww they are so sweet! The apples look so happy and cosy in their little jumpers. That cover would have definitely enticed me to buy it too even though I generally prefer books too.

  49. I picked up the mag at the weekend and only just got time to read it this morning, it is lovely and so inspiring in a non-obvious way. Already got me thinking and planning, love it!

  50. Wowzers!! They're a bit good aren't they?! You know what, Ive had a total hiatus from the world of wool and haven't felt tempted to hook for an age! In fact I was beginning to wonder if my crochet obsession was dying off...but no!! aha, thanks to you my lovely, I can feel the stirrings of Yarn Love bubbling up again - and also New Magazine Love too. Looks like a good one and certainly worth checking out next time I get to town!
Hope you are well in your little part of the world - sending you huge scoops of love
