Things That Stay With You.....

When I was about ten, it was the era of Wham, Duran Duran, pixie boots and sweat bands. I hated pixie boots, I hated Wham, and I hated sweat bands....but I really liked Duran Duran. At school, you were either team Wham or team Duran Duran (you wore wrist sweat bands with either groups name on), so I decided that I wasn't going to follow the trend and wore a badge (not as cool) with I LOVE HOWARD JONES on. I actually did like Howard Jones, and I liked him even more because no one else did.

This has sort of stayed with me all my life. If I hold up two outfits to ask anyone which they like better; whatever they chose, I then choose the opposite to wear.  It's not that I do it on purpose, it's just that it seems to click how much I like the other one. But maybe it's a subconscious throwback to being ten again.

When the trend was to loom, I decided that I would steer clear of it. I would see images of pretty loom wall hangings everywhere on Pinterest and blogs, but darn it, getting a free mini one on the current issue of Mollie Makes was just too tempting.

All non urgent jobs (washing, ironing, cleaning etc) were put aside and all available yarn was raided to find the right colours to have a go.

I LOVED IT

Ahem, think I might be quite addicted. Addicted enough to invest in a proper sized loom.

Not bad for a first novice attempt. A bit rough and ready, and tad wonky, but oh so much fun.

I was actually quite giddy with excitement that my first attempt wasn't as complete a sham as I was expecting. When I held it up excitedly to show Middle Bear, he just shrugged and walked off. When I excitedly held it up to show Eldest Bear, he enquired to its ACTUAL purpose. Charming! I laughed and said if they were cheeky about my creations I hang it in their bedrooms....to which Baby Bear replied he'd LOVE it in his bedroom. I was a little taken aback and said "really?", to which he replied "yes of course I would, why wouldn't I?"

Awe bless him. One out of three not being embarrassed about my makes isn't so bad. Although I do remind the older Bears when they are snuggled under my blanket creations all nice and snug and cosy.

  1. I've yet to understand the looming business of the big piles of fluff that a lot of them have, but these ones (the flat ones, ha) are rather beautiful! I love your colors, and I love the shape - so cute! :D It is always nice when one can be surrounded by things of their own creation! :D

  2. Aww bless him, so sweet! My boys are very polite about what I make, but I don't think my daughter is as taken with the creations...perhaps in time (she is 20 ;)). I liked Duran Duran and A - ha and dressed like a boy for a few years because I thought girls were silly creatures and I wanted to be like Biggles or Macgyver :). Take care and have a great weekend. 4. It looks very pretty! I have never done anything on a loom. I marvel in awe at the Native American Ladies who make this huge gorgeous rugs or blankets on a loom!
Maybe I should give a try!

  7. How lovely is your little bear!!! As lovely as your weaving! I purposely didn't buy that edition of the magazine as I didn't want to get tempted into something new, sounds as though the bug has well and truly bitten you though! xx

  8. As someone who appreciates weaving, but doesn't have room for even a proper table loom, so reverts to knit and crochet, I loved this post and your reporting of your children's responses.

Ah, but as to Howard Jones, I was never very aware of his music at all, but can report that I saw him perform as an opening act for The Eurythmics, ages and ages ago, at a wonderful concert held at NYC's Forest Hills Stadium, formerly the site of the US Open tennis tournaments. It was a grand night. I wore a plaid dress I'd made myself.

  9. oh oh... She got the loom bug. I have a big loom in my laundry room. In pieces. I got it about 3 years ago and still I haven't been able to put it together. Not because I don't want to, more because I don't have the space for it. I took a loom course. One full week of looming in Sweden. It was the most fun ever! I have a mission to ask my landlord lady if I might be able to use her part of the attic for my loom... If so I can see many rag rugs coming on in the future. Bring it on!

  10. Even with girls, I get the same! Kids, go figure?! That is a wonderful first time out creation! I've seen all the lovely weaving around in blogland...and I haven't tried it yet either, thinking I already have too many addictive activities. lol

  11. What a cute little loom! And your babybear....what a cute comment! My mother in law has a big loom for making lugs and such and I think it looks rather fun, I would love to have a try at making my own rug some day......we will see .....Right now its crochet that takes up my time but so far I have mostly made granny squares and I love them. But it would be nice to try some other pattern too. And I reacently bought Nicki Trenchs book "Cute and easy crochet" (in Swedish) so....soon I will try something new. My daughter almost always like what I made(the little I made so far) I was talking about making a little bad and she asked if I would make one for her.......
    Have a lovley day!/ Jeanette
