Ever get when you have an idea in your head for something.....
...but you can't quite actually see it?
You know what you want, but your image in your head of the finished item is all fuzzy and blurry. You haven't quite got definite and finalised details all mapped out to start the task.
So annoying.
I have this most deliciously soft and gorgeously coloured yarn......
.....and I have it in my mind to make a lovely bright, snuggly, chunky scarf, type thing.
But I just cannot decided on what pattern.
I spent all day yesterday starting with an idea.......it didn't feel right.....unravel.....start again with another idea.....it didn't feel right....unravel....you get the picture.
In total I think I started it eight times. I even put down the hook and picked up the needles to give it a go. Shock horror!
Nothing felt right though.
So....I'm putting it out there. Anyone with any suggestions, patterns, links, whatever, I'm positively welcoming. Anything to turn this into something around my neck, lift my spirits on a cold day and keep me warm!
I do want it plain though, so it will be one colour.
So, if your thinking caps are serving you well today, shove some ideas my way and I will be eternally grateful!
xxx
I bought a lovely pattern from Frayed Knot on ravelry, called the Perfect Cowl, it works up quite quickly, and is truly scrummy! Have a look, I'm sorry my reader won't let me post a link, but she's quite easy to find :) lovely yarn :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kathryn,
DeleteI love this cowl, and have actually made one before. We are on the same wavelength! ha ha! xx
I like those short row scarf's. If you follow the link http://www.pinterest.com/pin/52072939414978187/ instructions are underneath the picture. Jacqui x
ReplyDeleteHi Jacqui,
DeleteOoooh this looks nice, and basic knitting stitches too which I think I could actually master!!!! Thank you so much for the link xx
I know this feeling and it's frustrating when you have yummy yarn and can't quite find the right way to realise it into a yummy garment! Tracy St John's Fantascot is a lovely cowl - I made one as per the pattern in lots of different colours but it occurs to me that the combination of different stitch types might work rather beautifully in just the one colour allowing each stitch variation to sing out from the patterning alone. The pattern is free on Ravelry here http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fantascot
ReplyDeleteEnjoy hunting down your perfect pattern - you'll know when you find it! Looking forward to seeing what you choose when it emerges! E x
Hi Thomasina,
DeleteThank you so much for the link, it looks lovely and i'm quite taken with the idea of incorporating different stitch patterns but keeping the colour the same. It would give a lovely texture and still be simple. xx
I recently made a yummy, squishy, gushy scarf by crocheting 3 looooong pieces, then braiding them together. Super easy and super cute (if I do say so myself)!! I wanted to try something different, and after braiding my granddaughters LONG hair, it hit me! Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteOh Ann you are on my wavelength! I saw something similar on pinterest a while back made with simple knitted pieces. It looked really effective. Thank you so much for helping me! xx
DeleteI think just a simple moss stitch would show that yarn off beautifully. Have you got a 60cm circular needle? Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAh, you know Kath, I think that would look great in this yarn. I almost purchased an even chunkier one in a moss green shade. It was soooooo squishy and warm. I'd love to make a moss stitch scarf in a moss colour! xx
Deletehttp://bouncingbonbon.blogspot.com/2013/04/tada-crochet-cowl-and-tutorial.html It's super quick and easy and comfy and I love it!
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie,
DeleteThank you for the link to the cowl, it's fab. Loving your blog too, I am your newest follower and I cannot wait to carve out some time to have a long read with my next cuppa! xx
I love this circle-scarf!
ReplyDeletehttp://peoplewebs.blogspot.nl/2011/01/pattern-chunky-circle-scarf.html
I started it but my yarn was not the right one, so I guess I had the opposite problem you are having now.
Very curious about which one it is going to be! And love the question and of course all the answers, with a lot of inspiration!
Love Bambi
Hi Bambi,
DeleteWe are on the same wavelength! I love this cowl. I have made several for gifts for members of my family....funnily enough though, I never got round to making one for myself! It's a really lovely stitch pattern. I think if I made it using a really big hook so it remains softly slouchy it could look lovely! xx
I know exactly what you mean. I spent ages recently looking for a scarf/shawl pattern that I liked. Amazing how many happy hours can be spent on Ravelry though!
ReplyDeleteHi CJ,
DeleteFunnily enough, I totally forgot to look on Ravelry! What a muppet! Although, sometimes being on there can leave you even more confused as the choice is tremendous! xx
Hi there! My two favorites are the Shell Infinity scarf by Elise Engh and the Claudia scarf by Rebecca Jackson, both on Ravelry. I think the patterns really show off the stitch definition when using a solid color yarn. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteLynne
Hi Lynne,
DeleteI absolutely love the shell patterns in scarves. I made quite a few last year, some for myself and some for presents. I was beginning to think that actually a turquoise one would be rather nice, especially in a chunky yarn, it could look very cosy indeed! Thank you so much for the links, they are awesome xx
Hello!
ReplyDeletePlease take a look at the shawl I am crocheting right now...maybe it will inspire you. I could not post the link here but it is on my blog in today's post:-)
I love your blog...It is always so inspiring!
Angie

Hi Angie,
DeleteWow, your shawl is gorgeous! I'd love to make one like that. I actually have the perfect yarn for it too. Oh dear, my 'to-make' list has just increased! xx
Gorgeous colour of yarn. Loads of fabulous ideas already I see. That lovely chunky wool always makes me think 'cables' but I love Ann H's braiding idea too, that's a good one!
ReplyDeleteS x
I love cables. I'm laughing as I just bought a big chunky cabled scarf! I think I really do have a problem as I have way too many scarves as it is, yet I seem to rotate and wear them all, and I STILL don't have enough! I liked Anns idea too. I think braiding with chunky yarn could look really good! xxx
DeleteHi ! I'm actually having one of those moments too, but for my daugther's scarf. I think I will be finally making the Ingrid Scarf from Raverly, although I might be making the border on both sides and on just one colour, not sure yet myself... And so many other lovely suggestions here from your readers to look at. Cannot wait to see which one you go for in the end !
ReplyDeletexEva
Hi Eva,
DeleteOooooh that's a lovely scarf, and I actually love it in the grey colour way shown! Yes, a lot of lovely suggestions, I think my 'to-make' list has increased somewhat! ha ha! xx
I just made a scarf using this free pattern: http://peoplewebs.blogspot.com/2011/01/pattern-chunky-circle-scarf.html
ReplyDeleteIt's such a beautiful scarf and was so fun to make-not sure if it is what you are looking for but worth a shot! :)
-Carly
I love this one and have made it before! Although, It was for a present! It was a wrench to give away as it was so pretty, and made in a really luxurious yarn that was tremendously snuggly! I did say at the time that I really could do with one for myself! xx
DeleteI made a cowl from a pattern from a magazine I have you can look at my post from July, 30th 2013, labeled cowl - lady in red. I think this pattern would look gorgeous in this color. The onl problem is that I let a friend borrow my magazine and I forgot the name of the magazine ... If you like it I am sure I can do a bit of research and find it for you :)
ReplyDeleteI have done the same thing where I have this yarn I'm absolutely in love with I have an idea what I want to do with it but the pattern doesn't materialize itself... If you wait ... It will come. You are so talented I'm sure a great idea will just pop up when you least expect. :)
Hi Taciana,
DeleteI can't seem to locate that post. I do love a cowl! xx
What about making one of these ??
ReplyDeletehttp://img0.etsystatic.com/004/0/5184829/il_fullxfull.376089462_e4nq.jpg?ref=l2
Oh my word I love it. It's totally gorgeous. Need to track down the pattern or book. I could make about 10 of those and be very happy! ha ha! xx
DeleteIt can be hard sometimes, and incredibly frustrating, when you have the perfect yarn or fabric but the perfect idea doesnt present itself. Atleast you haven't compromised and had the strength of mind to unravel when it wasnt working.
ReplyDeleteHow about a chunky texture stitch like a bobble stitch to show off that gorgeous coloured yarn? Or blocks of bobble stitch or another textured stitch? I've just finished a multi-coloured scarf but finished it in a picot flower edging which has turned out great, if you're thinking of adding a trim.
Good luck finding the right pattern!
Gill xx
Hi Gill,
DeleteI tried a bobble stitch as I thought it would work well with a chunky yarn, but I just couldn't get it to look right. Mind you, I was just doing it off the top of my head, so had I had a pattern, it might have turned out a lot better! ha ha! I love your scarf though.xx
I'm offering up this
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/listing/82764357/instant-download-pdf-pattern-crochet?ref=shop_home_active
I made it but in the wrong blue as I couldn't wait until I had the right blue (you know the score?!)
Cuckoo said she liked it and would have it...I took it down to hers, we both agreed it was indeed the wrong blue, so cut it up and made it into a swimsuit (you read right)
Which I then put on (over my dressing gown) and posed for photos. Me and her almost wee'd with the hilarity of it, our collective boys barely looked up from their ipads. And the photo still exists. I'm not proud.
Anyway, its a beautiful pattern and crochets up really quickly.
fee xx
I really do like this one Fee, it looks snug and cosy and i think would look great in the bright aqua colour xx
DeleteHi, Rose i love your blog. I have a lot of yarn at the same way like you :\
ReplyDeleteNow, we live a warn spring, but for the next winter i want to crochet this scarf http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/L0435B.html?noImages=;utm_source=20120106_Jan06;utm_medium=Emails;utm_campaign=Weeklynewsletter;utm_content=P-CrochetLacyScarf&r=1
Cariños desde Argentina, Cecilia
Hi Cecilia,
DeleteOh I like this one and think it would suit the chunky yarn perfectly! xx
I'm absolutely not telling you what I'm making at the moment because you'll zoom ahead and I'll like yours better!!! xx
ReplyDeleteOh go on, give us a hint! I'll be glued to your blog waiting for a ta-dah!!!!! xx
DeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteMmm, I'm afraid I can't be of any help, since - funnily enough - I have about six balls of yarn in a very similar colour, impatiently waiting in their basket to be turned into... a scarf of cowl. ;-) I have not been actually trying any pattern with it yet, but spending (too) much time thinking about it for sure, haha. So far I'm considering doing a simple bobble stitch pattern, the moss stitch - I saw Inverleith also recommended this stitch! - or Tunesian crochet. Because all of these have a nice woven kind of texture. Anyways... Love to see what you decide on!
Have a lovely day, (It's sunny here!), Haafner
I haven't tried tunisian crochet yet, but have wanted to give it a go. I like the idea of the moss stitch too. I think in a chunky yarn it could look great xx
DeleteHello Vanessa,
ReplyDeleteThat wool is yummy!! The colour is beautiful and it looks very soft... Everybody has sent you loads of great ideas already.
Today I've seen a pattern for a "peacock" shawl on pinterest that could work (even though it is not a scarf) and I recently found some interesting free patterns on the favecrafts website. I put them on my Crochet Tutorials and patterns board on pinterest as I thought they were a bit different (like the maroma one or the One skein pattern). The link if you are interested is:
http://www.pinterest.com/londonowl/crochet-tutorials-patterns/
Look forward to see what you end up doing...
Pati x
Hi Pati,
DeleteLoving your board! Think I may have pinned everything from it! ha ha! xx
Hmmm what a great reference all these comments are for me too - there are some gorgeous ideas put forward. How about a peep at what Cherry Heart has been up to? She did this one http://sandra-cherryheart.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-gypsy-summer.html and also http://sandra-cherryheart.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/new-pattern-cherry-kisses.html I like the edgings on her shawls since it adds an instant vintage feel with duck egg blues and aqua yarns colours. I made a scarf from a squaring the circle by Little Woollie that draws a lot of attention and comments whenever I wear it. You will need scraps pf different colours to team with your main colour though http://pigstails.blogspot.com/2013/05/scarf.html xxxx
ReplyDeleteI adore all of Sandra's makes. She is one super talented lady. Her scarves and shawls are to die for! xx
DeleteThere is a very pretty, simple lace scarf/shawl pattern called Rachel's shawl on ravelry by Melissa Wyll. The story behind it is even better (linked on the rav page) and all proceeds from the purchase this month goes to Rachel's favorite Cancer charity. I think I knit mine in two days....so quick, but lovely (and really is more a wide scarf than a shawl, even though it's called a shawl).
ReplyDeleteOh I love this shawl. It's beautiful and the pattern is delicious. My knitting is rather basic though, I might have to hone my stitch skills a bit before I can attempt it! Have put it in my library though on Ravelry for future making! xx
DeleteI am making a crochet scarf at the moment and I am using the closed shell stitch...it comes out very soft and textured and easy to stich...hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the idea of the shell stitch as I think it would be right for the chunky yarn and also will still be drapy enough with it's soft texture xx
DeleteHi, it's great to have you back in the blogging world - your posts are always so beautiful and inspiring. I know exactly what you mean - that's happened to me many times in the past - where I know what I want, but can't just put my finger on it - very frustrating! I made this cowl a while back: http://www.dinkidots.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/cowl-ta-dah.html that might be what you're looking for. I love wearing it, it's so soft, cosy, floppy and squishy. It is a knitted pattern, but was actual pretty simple to do (or I wouldn't have done it!) I hope this helps... Maria x
ReplyDeletelovely wool & colour! how about this: http://pamistyle.blogspot.de/2013/09/loopy-loop.html
ReplyDeletei made this loop for myself & i am wearing it almost every day!
the pattern is in german, but i also do have a drawing and it would be no problem for me to translate it for you!
i´d love to do that :-)
pami
Fabulous colour!! How about, dare I say it, with the needles, a cowl with some cables?
ReplyDeleteI don't have a link to share, but I need to thank everyone for supplying theirs and ultimately making my project list longer.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind. ;)
Hello :) So happy you're blogging!! I have been brave recently & knitted a chunky snood after spotting a fab easy tutorial on Pinterest. I am by no means a knitter! In fact it intimidates me but having said that I still wanted to conquer something knitted, I have so many crocheted scarves so after buying some round bamboo circular needles from ebay I was all set and the results were truly satisfying! All you need to do is knit and purl. The ease of the needles made the experience so enjoyable!
