Indulgence, WIP's and a Ta-Dah........

I have had been waiting for this Half Term for quite some time. Life has been REALLY busy over the past 6 months. I haven't really stopped. I've lost my weekends for the time being, so I don't get a day where I'm not up really early and rushing about. I had been waiting......longing......for a week where I could have a few lazy mornings, and a few days to just potter.......and be.

I sort of realised that it was probably going to be a bit of an indulgent week. A week full of naughty treats and sneaky bites.

Well, bread has been made.......a lot. No Pics for that. It didn't last long enough. Warm bread needs to be buttered and eaten fairly quickly in this house.

I have been trying out different methods. Some have worked.....some have not. We have all eaten a lot of bread this week. I think I have grown twice as wide in seven days, but hey ho, I didn't really want to care.

Lattes. I LOVE them. Warm and frothy. Keeping chills at bay, and feeling very relaxed. A fair few have been made and lovingly sipped. It's been so nice to just sit....be silent......sip.......and think.

Eeek, scones and clotted cream popped into my grocery basket. My excuse was that I had so many little jam pots to use up (I need the jam jars for a crafty project I'm planning later on in the year). Really indulgent and naughty......but super nice.

It has also been a week for finishing things, carrying on with things, and making plans.

So my Ta-dah.......

Well, that's my Block Scarf

Just a simple shell pattern scarf. I wanted a bit of texture instead of flat lines, and I just wanted blocks of colour. I had seen a picture of some bedding on Pinterest here in shades of pink, ochre, white and brown. I thought they were such a nice combination, that I took inspiration and ordered some Drops Cotton Merino in shades 01 (white) 05 (powder pink) 12 (brown) and 15 (mustard).

I used 50g each of white and brown. 100g of mustard and about 75g of pink.

The yarn is simply gorgeous to work with. It was so soft, you almost couldn't feel it gliding through your fingers. It was the first time I had used it, and I shall definitely be using it again in other projects. The colour range is nice, and the colours themselves in the yarns are lovely. It's not the best picture, granted, but maybe if you look super hard, you can see there is a slight dimension in the colour. It almost could look a little speckled. The cotton thread is slightly noticeable running through the wool...and it's really pretty.

I made it really quite long in length, as I like to be able to wrap my scarves around the neck twice. It's lovely and soft and warm too.

So, another make ticked off.

I have spent a lot of the week, bed lounging. For me, it's the ultimate indulgence. It's also a safe place to retreat to when the Bears are home and taking over the whole house. It's my little space to be quiet, lay all my projects all over the bed. Sit with a cuppa and ponder over crafting stuff.

I told myself that I couldn't start on anything new until I had finished the Sunshine Day Blanket. It was my intention to carry on with it towards the latter part of the half term break. However, my mind is flitting here, there and everywhere. I bought a great little stool this week. Cheap and cheerful with wooden little legs and a toadstool type cushioned seat pad. Fabulously, it already came with a crocheted cover, but alas, it was black.........and I struggle with black for the most part (except weirdly, I'm becoming really attatched to the idea of a big wall of black ikea ribba frames, and I have just bought a black storm lantern). Maybe there will be a slight turn around like my loathing of pumpkin orange.

Anyway, I digress. I found some gorgeous pink chunky yarn in my sort out this week, and  MAN ALIVE, it was perfect for a stool makeover. I think it was wendy Mode chunky yarn. As soon as I discovered it, they discontinued it. Argh, the perfect pink in a chunky yarn, HOW COULD THEY DO THAT?

So, my head is thinking a nice new pink cover that would compliment the chunky little wooden legs well.

Also, this week, on my Ikea visit, I picked up a handy little big french style raffia bag for £2. IT's very handy, but it's very plain.....so......my head is thinking cross stitching on the front to cheer it up. I've got a pattern ready to embroider, I just need to make time for it now.

I picked up a lovely little vintage eiderdown a few weeks back from my local antique shop. A paisley print in duck egg blue was just what I had been searching for. It was a steal too. I was a little 'Phoebe' when I saw it, and whispered to thank the eiderdown gods for throwing it my way that day!

I figure though, that, it should sit with something to compliment it. I'm thinking a ripple in the same shades. It's my mission to get some colour matches and then make a start.

But, although my head is craftily racing with idea after idea, I need to concentrate on the Sunshine Day Blanket, and push to get it finished. I love how this blanket is coming on. The bright colours pop against the mid grey, but I got so disheartened after realising that when I thought I was almost finished, turned out I was only halfway done. I need to gee myself up again to just go for it.

I ADORE these little Motifs

And a sock photo bomb because it was quite clearly a pink and grey day for me.

This week has been much needed. I have felt relaxed. I have pottered, and I have seriously indulged. It has all been much needed though. Come Monday, things go back to being rushed and hurried.....and OH MY WORD I need to be good on the food front!

I shall have lovely memories to carry me through though, and nice makes to have shown for it. What more can I ask for?

Happy Weekend All

xxx

P.S. Thank you for all your kind messages with regards to my Bella Wrap make. I know that some of you had trouble accessing the pattern on Belinda's site, but if you didn't catch my edited bit on the last post, it is up there again for sale as an instant PDF digital download. I know a lot of you loved the pattern too. I know also, that some of you lovely peeps thought I was a tad harsh on my comments of the stylecraft yarn. I am an advocate of acrylic yarn. I make big blankets, and I would be bankrupt if I only used the expensive stuff. I know that Lucy from Attic24 uses it for her blankets and highly recommends it. I haven't really worked with stylecraft yarn much, as my local yarn shops don't stock it. I have used a couple of balls of DK for projects for others and it has been fine. I mix and match my acrylic yarns, as, I have said before, I have found that different dyes can affect the feel and look of the yarn, even in the same brand style. It could well be that this colour way in this super chunky yarn was not its best one in the range. I'm all for  seeing and feeling the WHOLE colour range. Yet, I stand by what I said. I wouldn't recommend this colour and yarn for this project. My own personal opinion. I'm sure others may use and think it's terrific. Good job we are all different. What a boring place it would be if we weren't!

  1. Hello Vanessa, I'm glad you've had a restful week. I have been feeling the same and have enjoyed a few days leave from work and some lazyer mornings. I absolutely adore your scarf, the colours together are wonderful! I'm also very much looking forward to seeing your Sunshine Day Blanket completed, again your colour combination is inspiring! I love to visit your blog and take a peek into your beautiful world, I know I don't comment very often (very lazy like that) but I'm an avid follower and a big fan of yours!

    1. Hi Samantha, thank you for taking the time to comment and for your kind words! I have decided that I love the blanket so much, that as much as I thought a lap blanket was a no no, even a small single bed blanket is not going to satisfy me! I've been working on it sitting on my bed this past week, and I think it'll look lovely as a bed throw! Geez, I don't make things easy for myself! I know that I'll love it so much when it is done though! Have the most super week! x

  2. Your scarf is gorgeous, I love that colour combination too, I bet you get loads of compliments when you wear it. I'm so glad you've had an indulgent week after so much busyness. Scones and cream are a big favourite round here as well, you've reminded me how delicious they are. Enjoy the rest of the half term break, CJ xx

    1. I've really enjoyed wearing my scarf this past weekend. It's beautifully soft and warm. Normally, the ochre isn't a shade I can get away with next to my skin tone but pairing it up with the other colours seems to work well. Thank goodness for pinterest to provide the colour inspiration! x P.s I had to walk twice as fast and hard this morning on the school walk to try and make up for all the scone eating! ha ha! x

    1. Awe thank you Asa-Marie for your kind words. There wasn't really a pattern for the scarf. It's just a basic shell stitch. If you google basic shell stitch scarf pattern I'm sure you'll get quite a few sites which help you out with that. The wrap in question was talking about the previous post where I knitted a waistcoat wrap. Have a super day! x

  4. Dear Vanessa,

Sounds you had a fab week!
And where to begin with commenting on your amazing work... Oh my... That blanket is probably going to be the best blanket ever. I mean, ever. It's gorgeous, love everything about it. And the scarf - yes please! Amazing, love it!

Your pictures want to make me throw out all my current wips and make something really nice, instead of all the okay-ish things I'm working on. Mmm, thanks for that! ;-)

Have a most lovely weekend (and thanks for your message, apologies for not replying yet!), and many thanks for sharing all this beauty...

I'm glad you liked Drops Cotton Merino because I plan to use this yarn for one or two bigger projects for spring/summer but I never had the chance to see and feel the yarn with my own eyes and hands. I think cotton and merino is an interesting fiber combination.

Your granny blanket looks so marvellous and I can't wait to see it finished! But I can understand that it is sometimes exhausting to work on such a long-time project when you have millions of other creative ideas in your head. Hang on there!

And one last word about warm bread with butter: fabulous!

  6. Hi, there, in my little town we have one shop that stocks rubbish types of yarn* (i wont say the names cos I can't remember, damn meno brain) so I have to order it ALL online, and love the recommendations of all the lovely crochet/knit bloggers, ahem my stash is larger that the amount of time i have to make stuff (I am being lapped now and granny squares are popping up again - what!)
*it had an ENTIRE wall of baby pastel in every ply and then one small wall of 'fashion' ie clothing yarn. I hinted to a mutual person and that has changed somewhat - but not the yarn - or the prices as it is the only shop in town blah.
Homemade bread + lots of butter (need to see teethmarks!) = heaven for me. oh is that why my b*m is big oh right, whatevs.

    1. Susan you have made me chuckle! Ah yes, yarn shops can be really hit and miss I think. I have a few good ones locally to me that do a fairly good range. It's so much better to be able to see and feel the yarn before you buy. Colour can be VERY misleading on computer screens, and some look beautiful, but the itch factor renders them a useless buy! Like you, I find recommendations useful, but again, it's a really personal thing. What you may LOVE about a yarn ball, others may loathe!!!!!! x

Your new color-blocked crocheted scarf is definitely a winner, and I thank you so much for the description of the yarn. Although I've heard of it before, I've never ordered Drops yarn and will have to do more research. Thank you!

  13. You have so many ideas - beautiful scarf and amazing combination of colours, sort of neopolitan. I love Drops yarn and have made so many blankets with it. There's a little wool shop in Alton that sells it. I bought Stylecraft DK as my daughter put in an order for a scarlet scarf - it's never going to be finished! I hated it too and have bought some pure wool for her scarf which may be ready for next Christmas!

  14. Hi Vanessa, it's lovely to hear you had a nice half term week, it looks so beautiful. I'm so with you on lattes & scones, both super yummy, funny thing is I didn't even like coffee a few years ago. Thank you for your very honest opinion on the yarn you used, for the trial Bella wrap, I like honest reviews. I know that other crocheters may have a differing view on the same yarn but this is your little space and on here your opinion is what matters. Your Bella wrap looks very pretty on the photos. I thought it would look very beautiful in a tweed yarn whatever you choose I'm sure it will look lovely as you have a great eye for colours & textures. Have a fabulous weekend. Anna xx

    1. Hi Anna,

I'm the same. I spent most of my life really not being able to drink coffee. I loved the smell of it, but the taste of it was just awful. Not just to drink, but in anything. About 10 years ago I woke up one day and just fancied having one. Lattes are my favourite by far (and if I have them skinny and decaf then I can justify the brown lumps of sugar that need to be added!!!!!!), but all types have their place in my house! Tea still is my main drink though. I cannot get through the day unless I have 2 cups of steaming hot tea before the morning school run. Coffee first thing is a definite 'no-no' in my house! Have a super week! x

  18. Oh yes, the colour combo you used for the scarf rocks and I love your squares as well! I fell in and out of love for spiced pumpkin over the years until I realised that I really like mustard much more as it is a cleaner, more vibrant colour and lifts surrounding colours whereas pumpkin sometimes drags down surrounding colours. Have a great week!

    1. I had such a loathing for that pumpkin colour. It just physically made me 'durgy'! I have NEVER been into the whole Halloween thing. The thought of actually parading black and pumpkin colour together (the worst two colours for me) was just something I could never do. I think I started to like yellows more, and then the mustard shade slipped in with some blanket making and I seemed to feel better. I still cannot do the Halloween thing! Pumkin colour is fine now in REALLY small doses paired with pinks. That's the only way I can get around using it! What a strange one I am!!!!!!!! Have a super week too! x

  19. It sounds like a great half term! I find them quite stressful somehow. I always have great expectations that go unmet. I am NOT an advocate of acrylic, but I do still use it for some things, and the big blanket point is well made. I hope you feel refreshed and ready for Monday!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I used to find them stressful when the BEars were very young. These days, the older Bears do their own thing. They are at the age where I am an embarrassment, so they prefer to do stuff alone! I haven't reached that stage yet with Baby Bear! He still enjoys my company!!!!!! I think acrylic has its place. Some Acrylic mix yarns feel better than some pure wool yarns. It's all down to personal choice (the itchyness and allergy factor always plays a big part with people) and money. Some yarns could seriously make you bankrupt!

  24. Hey V. I'm going to be perfectly honest with you, I have the concentration span of a gnat at the moment so I have done little more than skim through your post; focussing more on your beautiful pictures than your words. (I'll come back for a proper read soon, promise.) Completely adore your scarf - how funny, I'm also finding myself being attracted to blocks at the moment which pull together colours I wouldn't normally consider. Your reference to Stylecraft yarn caught my eye though and made me smile. I've chuffing hated all Stylecraft yarns that I've tried. I eluded to that on Facebook recently and got a number of affronted comments from people. Stylecraft yarns clearly have a loyal fan base!!! The fact of the matter is we are all entitled to express our likes and dislikes and not to be wrongly accused of yarn snobbery. There are plenty of inexpensive alternatives out there - like you, I'm a big Drops fan. Stick to your guns love and never be afraid of voicing your opinions! You can't please all the folk, all the time. xxx

    1. Yes, It's all down to personal choice isn't it. I got a fair few emails with people voicing their opinions. I've not really worked that much with stylecraft, and I only voiced an opinion on that one shade and style that I used. But I just didn't like it all that much. Having said that, I'll admit that I wear that wrap loads in the house at the moment. It IS warm, it's just the colour doesn't sute me, and the sheen on it when the sun shines is not attractive. I don't consider myself a yarn snob at all. I don't have the funds to be a yarn snob!!!!! I've made upwards of 20 blankets, and all have been made using acrylics and acrylic mixes. For me, it's all about finding the ones I can work with. I'm an avid mix and matcher of yarns, so long as they are the same weight and have cool wash ability. Some shudder at that! Again, it's all personal choice....and I like that we are all so different! I haven't used Drops so much, but I am loving what I have used so far, so I'm sure it will begin to feature more and more in what I make! Have a super week H xxxxx

  31. That scarf is so gorgeous!! Your opinion of Stylecraft Life put me off working with it for a little bit (I use Life quite a bit at the moment), but then I realised that I can't afford to do a blanket any other way, and now have this beautiful scarfy inspiration for the few balls of extra-fine merino I have left! Yay!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Awe Debbie, if you like using Stylecraft, please don't be put off by my personal opinion! It was mainly that colour that put me off. It was t right for me and the colour showed up the acrylic shine overtly. I use acrylic and acrylic mixes all the time for my blankets, but I mix and match my brands. I find some colours in acrylic look really good and others don't, which is why I mix brands. We'd all have to be really rather rich to make blankets in the super lovely expensive yarns. Acrylics certainly have their place and offer a huge variety of colour choices. Happy scarf hooking! X

    1. Don't worry - it wasn't you that put me off! It's because I agreed with you that I was put off... I like the Life for its value for money, but it can't hold a candle to lovely natural fibres - especially in tactile terms. I'm really happy to have found inspiration for my remaining merino yarn though! It certainly wasn't enough for a blanket, and I love the idea of having something wearable as it feels so damn good to the touch! I wrote a little bit about it here: http://inpursuitoftheworthwhile.blogspot.com.au/2015/03/a-hexagonal-update.html - I'm not totally happy with the way I managed to phrase everything though, so if you read it and want me to change anything then just let me know and I'll do that.
I'm getting into cotton at the moment too, as I've moved from the UK to northern Queensland, Australia, where it is super hot... I'm waiting to start work and get paid so I can top up my cotton stash again ($7 in my bank at the moment, so that won't go far!!) I have a couple of new cottons I'd like to try too: I've seen people use Drops Paris quite a bit, and I've also spotter Sugar n Cream online. It looks great in the pictures, so I'm hoping it will be great in real life too. I wrote about my cottony bits here: http://inpursuitoftheworthwhile.blogspot.com.au/2015/03/a-hexagonal-update-in-cotton.html
I'll stop waffling now as this is getting pretty long, but thank you for your lovely reply, and for being understanding as I realise I worded my initial comment pretty badly too. I'm obviously struggling to get back into writing!!

  34. I love the scarf so much I just ordered the same yarn. How many chains did you cast on for your shells and did you edge the scarf?

    1. Hi Donna,

I made a foundation chain of 48+1. I didn't edge the scarf as with this pattern, the edges are pretty neat and I wanted the colour blocks to be very definite. It's really a personal choice as to how wide you want the scarf, just multiples of 6 to get it the width you think you'd like. This was nice yarn so I wanted a decent width but not too wide, as I was making it quite long to wrap around my neck a good couple of times!
